Sporting thrills in Seychelles

03 Apr 2025

Seychelles is not only about lazy holidays spent relaxing on beautiful beaches. Three major sporting events are coming to the islands this year in May, July and August, and excitement is building, with plenty of arrivals expected for each one.

Beach Soccer WC

Seychelles’ international sporting calendar kicks off with the hosting of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup from May 1 to 11 in Victoria, Mahé.

This marks the first time the country will host the prestigious tournament and with 16 teams competing in a newly constructed 4 000-seat stadium in Roche Caiman, fans can expect a world-class spectacle.

Seychelles Football Federation President Elvis Chetty highlighted the event's significance: “The FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2025 isn’t merely a tournament; it’s a beacon of opportunity for the Seychelles.”

The host nation’s team will make its tournament debut, adding massive excitement for both local supporters and international visitors. Following the event, the stadium will be repurposed into two smaller venues to further promote beach soccer in the country.

The 2025 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup event will be the 13th tournament since its inception in 2005.

Seychelles Sailing Challenge

From July 20 to 27, sailors and adventure-seekers will take part in the Seychelles Sailing Challenge, a seven-day, six-night event that offers a unique combination of competitive sailing and island exploration.

Participants will navigate the turquoise waters around Mahé, Praslin, La Digue, and other iconic islands. Sunsail offers chartered catamarans for this race, with options for bareboat or skippered charters.

Daily prize-giving ceremonies and official functions at exotic locations will add to the festive atmosphere. Registration and more information are available at seychelleschallenge.com.

Seychelles Nature Trail Challenge

Trail running has become popular with South Africans and, for land-based adventure seekers, the Seychelles Nature Trail Challenge will take place on August 9.

The 22km race will take runners through breathtaking natural landscapes, offering a challenging yet scenic experience in one of the world’s most pristine environments where they can breathe the freshest air on the planet.

Air Seychelles offers three weekly return flights between Johannesburg and Mahé on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays using an Airbus A320.
