Survey claims travel surge – do you agree?

South Africans are planning to take more holidays next year, according to Marriott Bonvoy’s latest Ticket to Travel research – but the findings may not reflect what agents are seeing on the ground.

The survey, which polled more than 2 000 South Africans, suggests that nearly 50% of respondents intend to travel more frequently in 2026 than they did this year. Marriott reports that travellers are planning an average of six trips next year – two domestic breaks, two short-haul holidays (four hours’ travelling time or less) and two long-haul getaways.

Among those planning holidays, the top travel destinations are South Africa (25%), UK (10%), Mauritius (10%), USA (9%), Mozambique (9%), France (7%), Botswana (7%), Zanzibar (7%) and Italy (6%).

The research also highlights stronger demand from younger travellers, with 66% of Gen Z respondents saying they plan to take more holidays.
