Rome Fiumicino Airport has launched self-driving wheelchairs for passengers with reduced mobility.

Passengers can set the destination on the wheelchair screen to autonomously transport them to their gate. At the end of the route, the chair, fitted with smart sensors to avoid obstacles, automatically returns to its starting position.

The new devices are available in the Terminal 3 boarding area, covering routes to 14 gates (E11–E24) and three lounges in the non-Schengen area.

Four chairs are currently available as part of the project’s first phase, with assistance employees managing operations through a touchscreen interface to set passenger destinations within the airport.

The airport has also partnered with Be My Eyes to provide accessibility technology to blind and low-vision passengers.

Service Connect allows blind and low-vision travellers to access real-time assistance using advanced AI and dedicated service agents through the Be My Eyes app. Passengers can navigate the terminal, access flight information, locate services and receive immediate, tailored support through the app.
