New 3D scanners rolling out across airports in the US will allow travellers to keep laptops and liquids in their carry-on bags for inspection.
The scanners, first tested in 2017, have expanded to 12 locations, including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Washington Dulles and JFK airports. The Transportation Security Administration says 300 new machines will be deployed at US airports over the coming months, continuing into next year.
The scanners enable screening officers to detect explosives and other threats using cameras that allow images to be analysed from 360 degrees. Current 2D scanners are only able to provide a limited number of images from certain angles.
