Thailand could tax foreigners

Travellers entering Thailand by air could pay a fee of THB500 (R157) and those arriving by land could be charged THB30 (R9) a day from next year.
According to Public Health Minister Pradit Sintavanarong, the government of Thailand is considering a plan to charge foreigners an entry fee from January 1.
The minister said that officials from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Ministry of Public Health and the Royal Thai Police had discussed the matter and had all agreed with the idea.
This is an effort to crack down on foreigners who overstay their visas and to improve the quality of tourists visiting the country.
If approved, the fee would go into effect from January 1, although a delay until mid-January is possible to avoid confusing tourists during one of the country’s busiest travel seasons.
