Tourism chokes Lisbon’s streets

25 Aug 2024

The narrow streets of Lisbon are feeling the pinch. Severe congestion caused by overtourism is riling residents.

According to Euronews, the congestion comes as a result of too many tuk-tuks on the streets. They are used primarily by tourists as a form of transport.

A local activist organisation, QSintra has called on the city authorities to reveal its plan for accommodating increased overnight stays, (relating to the construction of a new hotel), and for limits on the number of cars and visitors allowed in the city.

Lisbon’s mayoral office has suggested limiting the number of tuk-tuks in the city, however the measure is still under discussion.
