Virgin plans cross-Channel trains

Virgin Group plans to raise £700 million (R16,6 billion) to launch cross-Channel rail services that would compete with Eurostar.

The high-frequency service between London and both Paris and Brussels could launch in the next ten years, according to Theguardian.com.

Eurostar services have operated across the Channel for 30 years.

China launches world’s fastest train

China has launched the ‘world’s fastest train’, which reaches speeds of 400kph, with a peak speed of 450kph.

The new train is currently undergoing tests in Beijing, according to Express.co.uk.

It features larger cabins, noise reduction, and adjustable storage for bicycles and wheelchairs.

The train is expected to reduce travel time on the Beijing-Shanghai route from four-and-a-half hours to around three. A commercial launch is possible early next year.

Amtrak unveils Teddy Roosevelt route

Amtrak Vacations has unveiled a new itinerary, ‘Yellowstone to Yosemite by Rail – Teddy Roosevelt Trail’, taking guests from Chicago to San Francisco on the California Zephyr train.

The 14-day trip encompassing the two iconic nature reserves, follows the journey taken by President Theodore Roosevelt and naturalist John Muir, from America’s first national park, Yellowstone to Yosemite Valley in California. It was discussions around campfires during this trip that led to the US’s first conservation policies.

The trip includes multiple overnight stays at hotels near Yellowstone and Yosemite National Parks, hotel stays in Chicago, Salt Lake City and San Francisco, and two nights on the train.

Tickets start at US$2 679 (R48 920) per person and are available from May. This includes rail, hotels, sightseeing and other activities and excursions.
