Trends shaping travel advisers’ choice of ITC model

Post-pandemic, more South African travel agents prefer to work as Independent Travel Consultants (ITCs) due to higher earnings, flexibility, work-life balance and remote work options, according to a survey. 

82% of ITCs recommend this career shift, according to the Flight Centre Independents survey, which polled local independent agents of both genders and ages.

Why going solo works

One of the key reasons for this shift to the ITC model is the high earning potential cited by 97% of respondents. Flexibility and independence were also highly valued. Among female respondents, 76,6% appreciate the freedom of not having a boss, while 50% of males feel the same. 

All respondents (100%) valued the ability to work from anywhere they choose, and 91% said they appreciated the work-life balance that being independent afforded them. This allows them to schedule work and clients around daily life and children, with some even preferring to work after hours while still providing same-day turnaround for clients.

Post-pandemic effects

Despite concerns such as the return of the pandemic and flight cancellations, the benefits of being independent outweighed them. As a result, 93% of respondents said they were very likely to remain independent. 

Chantal Gouws, Flight Centre Travel Group’s General Manager Independent Brands, explains that the pandemic has changed the travel landscape, making it more complex. As a result, travellers have rediscovered the value of the human element, whether it was a travel agent in a physical outlet or an independent agent online. This sentiment was experienced by ITCs surveyed, with 71% saying their clients now have a greater appreciation of their services. 

Overall, respondents considered that aligning with a known and reputable brand was vital, as it removed the fears of clients who were more familiar with a brick-and-mortar agent. This also gave independents the support and systems they needed to provide world-class service.

“Travel can still be a bit of a challenge, but it’s great to see our independents thrive and to hear that they feel valued by their customers. We’re excited to welcome more individuals into our community and provide them with the necessary support for their entrepreneurial journey,” says Gouws.
