UK outlines plan to limit flight disruptions

The UK Department of Transport has set out contingency measures to reduce potential flight disruptions in the event of jet fuel shortages.

The department emphasised that there were no immediate supply issues and that the measures would allow airlines to plan schedules in advance to offset short‑notice flight changes at the airport.

The measures would allow airlines to consolidate schedules on routes with multiple flights to the same destination on the same day. Instead of last-minute cancellations, the measures would allow airlines to do the following:

  • Move passengers on to similar services much earlier, avoiding delays at the airport.
  • Avoid having to operate flights that have not sold a significant proportion of tickets.
  • Reduce the waste of fuel by flying near-empty aircraft.
