Cape Recife Nature Reserve, a pristine marine reserve on the outskirts of Gqeberha, will launch guided land-based coastal safaris over the Easter weekend.
The new safaris promise to expose tourists to a wealth of coastal fauna and flora, including whales, dolphins, penguins and other bird life, as well as myriad residents of intertidal zones and dune systems.
Tours are open to day-trippers and each last for three hours. They include either a beach breakfast or an evening drive ending in a sundowner stop with snacks and drinks.
Trips are by vehicle, on tracks behind the dune cordon, and include stretches of dune-walking, beach, and rocks. The price is R385 per adult, with children under 12 paying half price.
While the tourism industry combats the COVID-19 slowdown, the Cape Recife Nature Reserve approved operator, Loodt Buchner, says this challenge has forced product owners to be innovative and seek new avenues to ensure that they survive and minimise job losses.
“These have been very dark times, but we have managed to not only retain every one of our staff, but also to increase job opportunities. Tourism is a true lifeline in this part of South Africa, and we are extremely grateful to be able to offer hope and dignity to our community. We have made our launch rates highly affordable to the average South African. We believe that every citizen should be able to experience their heritage and it is our privilege to show them this new world,” says Loodt.
