From June 30, the Australian Government and The
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in the United States will enforce
new limits on the quantity of powder product travellers can pack in carry-on
baggage on international flights.

The new rules will also apply to travellers on domestic
flights that depart from international terminals, or are transiting through
Australia/USA from another country.

For travellers going to Australia the quantity restrictions
are as follows:

  • There
is no limit on organic powders, such as food and powdered baby formula.
  • Inorganic
powders must be in containers of 350ml (volume), 350 grams (weight) or less.
  • The
total volume of inorganic powders must not exceed 350ml, 350 grams per
    person.
  •       There
are no restrictions on the number of containers of inorganic powders per
person, provided the total volume of all the containers of inorganic powder is
    350ml or less.
  • ·At the
screening point all powders in carry-on baggage must be separately presented
for screening. Unlike liquids, they do not need to be put in a re-sealable
    plastic bag.

Inorganic powders
include: salt, salt scrub, sand, some talcum powders, some powdered deodorant,
certain foot powders, and powdered detergent/cleaning products.

Organic powders
include: powdered baby formula, powdered food, coffee, protein powder, flour,
spices, sugar, most cosmetics, and Epsom salts.

For travellers flying into
the US, both organic and inorganic powdered substances will need to be packed
in containers smaller than 350ml.
