US officials have warned that foreign visitors who overstay their welcome during the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be detained. The tournament is to be co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico.

US President Donald Trump has signed an Executive Order establishing a White House Task Force to oversee preparations for the FIFA World Cup. Trump positioned himself as Chair, with VP JD Vance as Vice-Chair.

"We want them to come. We want them to celebrate. We want them to watch the game. But, when the time is up, they have to go home," Vance said at a recent World Cup meeting at the White House.

US Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy added: “If you are coming to watch the football, go on a road trip, go see America. But don’t overstay your visa, don’t stay too long.”
