Venice to fine day-trippers avoiding fee

Day-trippers who fail to pay the €5 (R100) environmental entrance fee to Venice will face fines between €60 (R1 210) and €310 (R6 250).

Last December, Venice officials announced the introduction of a day-tripper fee from April 25 after the city narrowly escaped being placed on Unesco’s list of World Heritage Sites in Danger due to overtourism and pollution.

During a press briefing, Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro announced that lines might form at the city’s official entry points as trained personnel verified day visitors’ QR codes confirming their fee payments or exemption vouchers, reports euronews.com.

Stewards will remind and assist visitors arriving at train and bus stations to ensure their QR codes are downloaded. Physical pay points will be set up for visitors without smartphones.
