Venice and the Italian National Tourist Board have revealed a QR-based digital platform to support the payment of Venice’s new tourist access fee to be implemented in April.
Tourists visiting sites in the city between 08h30 and 16h00 from April 25 to mid-July will be charged.
The fee is an experiment to monitor tourist flow and discourage visits during the peak season and encourage more sustainable practices.
Day trippers will pay the fee on the Venice Access Fee portal and be issued a downloadable QR code one-day pass to gain access to the city.
Overnight visitors will be exempt, along with visiting volunteers, students, athletes visiting for sporting events and children under 14. Exempt visitors must still register on the portal.
