THE world’s first
wandering hotel,
700 000 Hours, is
set to open in September.
The hotel welcomes guests to
a new location in a new country
every six months. Salento, on
the Italian peninsula, has been
selected as its first opening
destination.
Thierry Teyssier and
his team select authentic
private homes to convert
into temporary hotels for
their short visits to every
destination.
Small Luxury Hotels of the
World, of which 700 000
Hours is a member, has said
a new trend has recently been
noticed where luxury travellers
want to design their own
experience. New concepts,
such as the ‘wandering’ hotel,
where guests play a part
in choosing the hotel’s
next location, have emerged
this year.
However, the concept of
temporary pop-up glamping
hotels is not a new one,
particularly in the music and
event festival industry.
Black Tomato, a UK-based
adventure company, won the
Best Innovation in Travel Award
at the 2017 Globe Travel
Awards for its ‘Blink’ pop-up
travel concept that allows
clients to design their own
temporary accommodation
and experiences in untouched
locations around the world.
The company offers anything
from safari-style tents
overlooking the Mekong River
to lunar-like bubbles on the
Bolivian Altiplano.
In South Africa, a company
called Pop-up Camps SA offers
a similar concept, focusing
on environmentally sensitive
accommodation
and hospitality solutions
for luxury adventure travel
seekers. The company sets
up camp in remote locations
such as the Wild Coast,
Breede River, Dinokeng and
Baviaanskoof for selected
dates one or twice a year,
providing a base for clients to
explore the area.
