The 2020 Olympic Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo have been rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021.
It was also agreed that the games will keep the name Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.
The International Olympic Committee faced weeks of public outcry to come to this decision as it previously insisted that the games would go ahead in spite of the rapid global spread of COVID-19.
The leaders agreed that the Olympic Games in Tokyo could stand as a ‘beacon of hope’ to the world during this difficult period. Therefore, the Olympic flame will stay in Japan.
