The iconic paper ticket for travelling on the Paris Metro is coming to an end after 120 years.
The city’s public transport authority is phasing out the rectangular pieces of card by replacing it with tickets on mobile phones or travelcards, according to The Guardian.
Sales of metro tickets still total 550 million per year, the equivalent of over 50 tonnes of paper. The introduction of reusable plastic smartcards will replace the tickets and cut down on the waste, officials say.
Ticket-issuing machines are being phased out across the city network and, by 2025, the metro ticket will have reached its final stop.
