Air Namibia – ‘we’re not insolvent’

BELEAGUERED airline, Air

Namibia, has released a

statement advising that

the recent media reports

circulating about its

insolvency are false.

In September, there was

press speculation that

the airline was in a state

of insolvency. According

to reports, the airline’s

communications manager,

Paul Nakawa, said the

airline was depending

primarily on subsidies from

the Namibian government

and that its economic

challenges outweighed its

contribution to Namibia’s

tourism industry. The

Namibian government was

considering whether to keep

the airline as a state-owned

entity or to offload it to a

private investor, said Paul.

Air Namibia has

responded to the reports

in a statement, saying that

no decision had been taken

by the shareholder, the

Government of the Republic

of Namibia or the board,

to close down the airline.

It also advised that there

was no pending application

for the liquidation of Air

Namibia as had been

reported in the media.

“Air Namibia will continue

to fly as per the published

schedule for the foreseeable

future. The national airline

is receiving assistance from

its shareholder as per the

budgetary provision and

allocation as announced at

the beginning of the current

financial year,” the airline

said.

In cases where the airline

was behind in the payment

of invoices, it had entered

into payment arrangements

with the relevant suppliers,

the airline said in the

statement.
