Austria launches night trains

09 Oct 2023

A new generation of sleeper trains will connect Vienna with Germany, Italy and the Netherlands.

Due to increasing demand for more sustainable travel options, night trains are making a comeback in Europe due to their low carbon footprint, according to euronews.com.

The new trains feature more modern designs, privacy and a toilet and shower for every two-person compartment. The trains also have single-person cabins for solo travellers.

The first of 33 new trains will come into service in December, and connect the Austrian cities of Vienna and Innsbruck to the German port of Hamburg.

By 2028, sleeper trains will have been phased in on other routes in Austria, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and possibly France, depending on approvals from the French railroad authority.

Ticket sales for the first route start on October 11.
