Bali plans to cap tourist numbers

Bali Governor Wayan Koster has proposed a quota system where foreign holidaymakers planning to visit would have to register for their trip a year in advance.

The long-term system would mean that travellers would have to wait in turn to visit Bali, which has seen a recent tourism spike. Visitor numbers have jumped to over 300 000 a month since the beginning of this year, according to eturbonews.com.

“We will no longer welcome mass tourism. We will restrict tourist numbers by implementing a quota system. If there is a quota, then people will have to queue. Those who want to come next year, can sign up from now,” said Koster.

The website reports that the surge of visitors has led to tensions with locals, who complain of increased traffic, pollution and a lack of respect for their local Hindu traditions and culture.

News.com.au reports that the Indonesian government is also considering implementing a tourist tax of up to US$150 (R2 765) to stop Bali from being seen as a cheap holiday destination.
