Barcelona is considering increasing its tourist tax for short-stay cruise passengers by fast-tracking the yearly increase that was introduced last year.
The city’s Mayor, Jaume Collboni, is pushing to double the tax with immediate effect, meaning it would increase for passengers docking overnight from €4 (R77) to €8 (R154) per night.
Barcelona’s City Council approved plans in July 2025 to increase the tax by €1 (R20) every year until 2029 when it would reach €8 (R154). Collboni now wants to ensure that the increase is implemented within the next few months instead of gradually over the next four years.
