Botswana travellers now need UK visa

On October 14, the UK introduced visa requirements for citizens of Botswana, with immediate effect.

Nationals of Botswana will no longer be eligible for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) and will have to apply for a Standard Visitor Visa. They will also need to obtain a Direct Airside Transit Visa if they intend to transit via the UK.

A transition period is in place for travellers who secured an ETA and have a confirmed UK booking before 15h00 on October 14, for travel taking place no later than 15h00 on November 25.

In a statement, the government said the measures had been introduced due to an increase in Botswana nationals travelling to the UK for purposes other than those permitted under visitor rules. This included a significant number of asylum claims since 2022.
