CAPE Town's crowd-pulling "Coon Carnival" could eventually rival Rio's saucy street parade, officials have announced.
A snaking spectacle of bare-breasts and G-stringed bottoms writhing to the beat of drums and jazz would complement the brightly costumed, singing and dancing Cape minstrels in a Mardi Gras festival of fun and feasting, if a new committee set up to expand, promote and sell the event, succeeds.
Chaired by Cape Town Tourism boss Sheryl Ozinsky, the committee includes Department of Cultural Affairs officials and Kaapse Klopse members.
The parade would include townships, the city centre and suburbs. However, cash must be raised and security improved first.
"Tourism would be boosted and it could be a money-spinner," said a Cultural Affairs spokesperson. "It would draw people from different cultures together."
