Casablanca Airport set for huge expansion

Morocco will invest MAD15 billion (R30,4bn) in a new terminal at Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport, aiming to transform it into a major African hub ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The expansion will triple the airport’s annual passenger capacity – from 10,5 million to 35 million – by 2029, just in time for the tournament, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal.

The airport upgrade is a key part of Morocco’s wider strategy to double national airport capacity to 78 million passengers per year.

According to the Moroccan Airports Authority, ONDA, the new terminal will be integrated with high-speed rail connections, allowing travellers to reach Marrakech in 50 minutes and Tangier in 90 minutes.

National carrier Royal Air Maroc is also scaling up in line with these ambitions, with plans to double its fleet from 50 to 100 aircraft by 2030, and to double it again to 200 by 2037.
