Checkpoint Charlie to be redesigned

Checkpoint Charlie, the famous former border crossing between East and West Berlin during the Cold War, is set to undergo a redesign that will include the construction of a new memorial site.

The new site, ‘Forum Checkpoint Charlie’, will be built on the east and west of the Friedrichstrasse-Zimmerstrasse intersection.

According to TravelMole, the new memorial will replace the BlackBox Cold War attraction, which traces Berlin’s role in the global confrontation, and the Panorama DIE MAUER, a 360-degree immersive art installation.

The project will be carried out by the Berlin Wall Foundation, which is currently in charge of five different Berlin Wall-related memorials.

According to the Berlin Wall Foundation, the new memorial will feature a free outdoor exhibition about the historic site as a Cold War scene, an information centre and a temporary exhibition space. The venue will host seminars and events and the temporary exhibition will offer showcases to explore and illustrate the Cold War in more depth.

Construction on the new memorial is tentatively slated to begin in 2028, with completion by 2030.
