Cyprus welcomes digital nomads

According to euronews.com, Cyprus is one of the latest countries to welcome remote workers since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The country is open to non-EU nationals and its digital nomad visa launched in 2021 with a cap of 100, which was increased to 500 visas last year.

The visa is available to non-EU/EEA citizens who work for an employer registered outside Cyprus.

Digital nomads need a monthly income of at least €3 500 (R68 730), after deduction of contributions and taxes, and can bring their families with them, however they are not permitted to work in Cyprus.

The initial permit is for one year after which another two-year extension can be applied for.

Applications can be made at Cypriot embassies. Passports must be valid for at least three months after arrival in the country, and the following documents must be provided:

·     Proof of income (bank statements and payslips)

·     CV

·     A letter of intent outlining reason for working in Cyprus

·     Proof of €30 000 (R589 100) in health and accident insurance for the entire stay

·     Proof of accommodation in Cyprus

·     A certificate proving a clean criminal record

A €70 (R1 370) application fee is also required.

The approval process takes between five weeks and three months. Successful applicants must attend a follow-up meeting at the offices of the Civil Registry and Migration Department in Nicosia to secure a temporary residence permit.
