Europe strikes expected until Easter

Planned industrial action in the run-up to the busy Easter holiday period may lead to disruption at airports in Spain, France and the UK.

According to Euronews, Spanish airports have been facing strikes by unionised workers at ground services and cargo handling company Swissport Handling since February 27. Workers have called for 24-hour walkouts every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday until April 13.

This is affecting services at Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, Reus, Alicante, Valencia, Murcia, Málaga, Almería, Salamanca, Valladolid, Burgos, Logroño, Zaragoza, Huesca, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife Sur airports.

Travellers arriving in the UK today (March 15) and early tomorrow have been warned to be prepared to face longer wait times at the UK border control and check with their operator before they travel due to the latest Border Force strike today, according to travelweekly.co.uk

Walkouts and protests by workers in France are also expected today. Several French unions have called for strikes and demonstrations as workers oppose plans to raise the pension age in the country.

In the UK, more than 3 000 security guards, engineers and firefighters at Heathrow are voting on whether to strike over low pay. Thepointsguy.co.uk reports that Unite is holding a ballot calling for action in April which closes on Friday, March 17. If members vote for industrial action, the strikes could coincide with the Easter holidays.
