Days of heavy rain have caused chaos for travel services in several central and eastern European countries, including Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, and most recently Italy.
According to FlightAware data, international airports in the region, including Warsaw Frederic Chopin in Poland, Václav Havel Airport in the Czech Republic, Henri Coandă International in Romania, Vienna International in Austria, and Budapest Ferenc Liszt International in Hungary, have had increased delays over the last week.
Poland and the Czech Republic have experienced the worst impact, with numerous submerged cities and towns and hundreds of thousands of people displaced. Many roads and railways in these two countries are closed.
Austria
Vienna's public transport services have been suspended and severely restricted. Some roads have closed and some underground train services cancelled .
Slovakia
The Danube’s level has risen nine metres in the Slovakian capital of Bratislava, submerging part of the city's popular Old Town, a tourism destination, and flooding roads.
Hungary
In Budapest, 480km of road alongside the Danube is closed due to flood warnings. The river's flooding is disrupting river cruise itineraries on the Danube. Additionally, certain tram lines have suspended operations.
Italy
On September 19, the storm migrated towards the Emilia Romagna region in northern Italy, resulting in the cancellation of five railway line services and the closure of many roads. Multiple rivers are overflowing in towns and cities in Emilia Romagna. Bologna, Ravenna, Forli, Cesena and Rimini are all affected by floods.
