Monday smile: Record for St Helena’s Jonathan the tortoise

Jonathan the tortoise has been recognised as a Guinness World Records (GWR) ICON. As one of St Helena’s most recognisable figures, Jonathan is 194 years old and has been officially recognised by GWR as the oldest known land animal. He lives on the island, spending his days at Plantation House, the governor’s residence.

“Jonathan’s recognition is warmly welcomed by the people of St Helena. For generations, he has been regarded as a local icon, deeply embedded in the island’s identity and collective memory,” said Nigel Phillips, Governor of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha.

“This global acknowledgement reflects what the community has long known: that Jonathan is not only remarkable in age, but truly special to St Helena and its people.”
