FlySafair cabin crew to strike

FlySafair says it does not anticipate disruption to flights after the South African Cabin Crew Association (SACCA) served notice of industrial action, with about a third of the airline’s cabin crew set to strike from the evening of November 3.

The strike noticed follows months of wage negotiations between FlySafair and SACCA through the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). A protected strike became legally possible after the 30-day dispute period expired.

The union rejected the airline’s latest offer, which included a 5,7% salary increase, a 7,5% annual bonus, annual experience-based pay progression and additional monthly allowances.

FlySafair has also issued a notice of an employer-initiated work stoppage set to commence on the evening of November 3.

“We value our cabin crew enormously and have aimed to strike a balance between rewarding them and safeguarding the long-term sustainability of the airline. Ultimately, we must ensure FlySafair remains viable and affordable for the millions of travellers who rely on us,” said Kirby Gordon, Chief Marketing Officer.

No disruptions expected

FlySafair said it had secured full crew coverage from employees willing to work.

This has been assisted by the airline currently operating a reduced schedule as part of its planned pre-festive fleet maintenance programme.

Should the situation progress, FlySafair said it would apply for a Section 150 mediation at the CCMA, allowing senior commissioners to intervene, with the objective of securing a fair and rapid settlement while minimising disruption and cost to the public.

“Our crew play an essential role in delivering a safe, friendly, and reliable service,” Gordon added. “We hope to reach an agreement soon and will continue working towards a resolution founded in respect, fairness, and long-term sustainability.”
