Frankfurt tests first walk-through scanner

Frankfurt Airport has begun testing the world’s first contactless walk-through security scanner for passengers.

The R&S QPS Walk2000 from Rohde & Schwarz is a 360° scanner is designed to speed up security checks at the airport. Its millimetre-wave technology can penetrate multiple layers of clothing, making it unnecessary to remove jackets and coats. What this means for passengers is that instead of stopping to be scanned, they slowly walk through the scanner to pass security. This is a gamechanger for passengers’ comfort and personal privacy.

The AI-based detection software in the scanner automatically detects metallic and non-metallic objects. Anomalies can be identified and displayed in real-time, reducing the need for follow-up checks.

The checkpoint selected for the six-month test phase is in the Schengen Concourse A of Terminal 1. About 15 000 passengers pass through the concourse daily, making it ideal for testing the new scanner.
