Gatwick Airport can move ahead with plans for a second runway after the UK Court of Appeal dismissed a legal challenge by a local campaign group.
Last year, Communities Against Gatwick Noise Emissions (CAGNE) lodged a judicial review, claiming the climate impact of the runway expansion had not been properly assessed and that development consent should not have been granted.
Earlier this week, the court dismissed the challenge and refused the group permission to appeal the decision.
The expansion will see the airport’s current back-up runway repurposed to operate alongside the main runway, enabling more than 100 000 additional flights per year. The first flights are expected to operate from 2030.
