Gatwick second runway hits roadblock

A legal challenge has been filed against Gatwick Airport’s plans to add a second runway after the expansion was approved in September.

Campaign group Communities Against Gatwick Noise Emissions (CAGNE) has lodged a judicial review, claiming the climate impact of the runway expansion was not properly assessed and that development consent should not have been granted.

The expansion would see the airport’s current back-up runway repurposed to operate alongside the main runway, enabling more than 100 000 additional flights per year by the late 2030s.

CAGNE argues that the environmental assessment contains significant gaps, including the treatment of inbound flight emissions, the impact of non-carbon dioxide emissions, and the consideration of risks related to the UK’s Jet Zero Strategy. It also claims that noise impacts and wastewater requirements were not adequately weighed in the planning decision.
