Gatwick steps up nett-zero goals

London Gatwick Airport has announced its commitment to achieve nett zero by 2030, a decade earlier than its previous commitment.

The airport’s new commitment is aligned with both VINCI Airports’ environmental action plan, which aims for all its EU airports to be nett zero by 2030, and fund manager Global Infrastructure Partners’ strong commitment to decarbonisation action.

Gatwick plans to invest over £250 million (R5,6bn) in the reduction of carbon emissions.

The means by which nett zero will be achieved include moving to an electric vehicle fleet and replacing gas boilers and refrigerants with low-carbon alternatives.

The airport will also continue to reduce overall energy use and invest in on-site renewable energy, including solar power, and source renewable electricity through Power Purchase Agreements to further continue its role in helping the UK to decarbonise.

More details on the airport’s nett zero plans will be released in the coming months.
