Germany will have new COVID-19 protection measures from October 1, in which all people over the age of 14 will have to wear face masks on long-distance trains. However, the same requirement is not required in airports, for domestic or international flights.
Visitors to hospitals and nursing homes must also wear a face mask at all times, and show proof of a negative rapid antigen test result to be allowed entry. Staff at hospitals will need to test three times a week for COVID-19.
Individual states will be able to introduce additional mask requirements on other public transport and indoor areas, as well as in secondary schools. They can also implement testing in schools and day-care centres if they choose.
People who can present a recent negative test result, proof of recovery from a recent infection or vaccination certificate no older than three months might not be required to wear a face mask, but it is up to individual states to implement these regulations.
This new set of mandates will be up for review on April 7, 2023.
