THE European Tour Operators Association (ETOA) has warned that high hotel rates, difficulty getting visas and “punitive” taxes are leading to a drop in tourists to the UK in the run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games.
A survey published by ETOA showed that the UK was losing around 500 000 potential visitors a year through difficulties of obtaining a visa. ETOA described the current visa regime as bureaucratic. The results further led ETOA to describe the UK system as “arrogant and slightly racist”.
The survey of overseas travel companies rates the country top of the league for visa problems and suggests more than 300 000 long-haul visitors a year are deterred from taking a holiday in Britain.
