Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) has recorded the highest number of domestic passengers since domestic air travel resumed in June 2020.
In April 2021, domestic passenger numbers reached 436 642 (61% of April 2019 numbers). International passenger numbers were 28 329 (14% of those in April 2019).
In April 2020, only 83 domestic passengers and 7 736 international passengers passed through the airport.
“Cape Town International Airport is the gateway to tourism in the Western Cape and we are well-positioned to play our part in rebuilding the economy through facilitating trade, travel and tourism in the region. The April 2021 holiday period was the city’s busiest since the hard lockdown, bringing a much-needed boost to the Western Cape economy,” said Mark Maclean, acting gm of CTIA.
He said early statistics for May indicated even further growth in domestic passenger numbers for the month. “In addition to the seven domestic airlines, there are currently eight international carriers operating at the airport, with a further nine international carriers indicating a return to service at CTIA during 2021, with some indicating they wish to resume international flights as early as June 1.”
