Hong Kong, Newark remove LAG rules

Airports in Hong Kong and the United States have started rolling out new security scanners that do away with previous LAG restrictions in carry-on luggage.

Newark Liberty International Airport has upgraded its Transportation Security Administration checkpoints by installing 11 3D detection scanners in Terminal B.

The new scanning equipment uses algorithms to generate three-dimensional images of passengers and their hand luggage, which can be manipulated and rotated by security officers for better threat identification.

This allows security to identify items without further screening and bag checks.
The scanners allow passengers to walk through the security checks without removing objects such as liquids from their hand luggage.

Hong Kong International Airport will introduce a new smart security screening system from July, and aims to be the world’s first to operate the equipment across all security channels in the airport.

HKK’s new technology came into operation at Terminal 1 on July 2. In addition to using new screening technology that allows passengers to keep electronic devices as well as liquids, aerosols and gels in their carry-on luggage, the new system also automatically alerts passenger when an item has been left behind on a tray.
