Robotaxis head to Madrid

Uber, in collaboration with autonomous driving technology company WeRide, has announced plans to launch robotaxis in Madrid. The pilot is said to be the country’s first commercial robotaxi programme.

Operations are to begin later this year, with rides available via the Uber app.

“Launching driverless robotaxis in Madrid, one of Europe’s fastest-growing urban environments, demonstrates our ability to operate safely in complex real-world conditions. Spain is our fifth European market entry and further strengthens our position as a trusted robotaxi operator across the continent,” said Tony Han, Founder and CEO of WeRide.

Sarfraz Maredia, Global Head of Autonomous Mobility and Delivery at Uber, said: “Madrid represents an important next step in our partnership with WeRide to bring autonomous mobility to more people around the world.”

The project marks WeRide and Uber’s first joint entry into the European market, building on existing commercial services in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with Riyadh expected to follow.

The initiative is supported by a partnership with the Region of Madrid.
