Significant upgrades at the Green Point Athletic Stadium in Cape Town are nearing completion with improvements set to align the facility with international standards. The upgrades, managed by the city’s Strategic Assets Department, aim to enhance the stadium’s infrastructure to support local and international events, boosting the economy and community engagement.

The stadium, which opened to the public in 2015, has been extensively used for events such as the HSBC Cape Town 7s warm-ups, the Cape Town Cycle Tour and the Spar Women’s Challenge. However, a 2022 conditional assessment revealed the need for urgent maintenance as the track approached the end of its life cycle.

The upgrade project includes the installation of a new polyurethane track system which will bring it in line with World Athletics Class 2 certification standards.

James Vos, Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, emphasised the importance of the upgrades. "Improvements to the Green Point Athletic Stadium reflect the city’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing strategic assets. These investments ensure facilities meet international standards and maximise economic and social value."
