Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry has banned elephant rides nationwide following a directive that was issued last month in response to a PETA investigation.
According to PETA, Mason Elephant Park and Lodge in Bali became the last facility in the country to end elephant rides this week.
“The move puts Indonesia at the forefront of elephant welfare. While more work remains, this makes Indonesia the first country in Asia to ban elephant rides nationwide,” said Jason Baker, President of PETA Asia.
The association is now calling on Nepal, Thailand, India, and other countries to ban the practice and also calling on travel agencies worldwide to stop selling packages that include elephant rides.
