The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, to have taken place in Italy this weekend (May 19-21) has been called off as a result of severe flooding in the area.
At least eight people have died due to the heavy flooding and mudslides in the area, while 13 000 residents have been forced to evacuate.
According to CNN, the first event of Europe’s Formula 1 season has been cancelled over safety concerns. Formula 1 released a statement on Twitter, saying that following discussions with multiple parties, it decided not to proceed with the Grand Prix weekend in Imola, as it was not possible to safely hold the event for fans, team, or personnel.
Emilia Romagna Vice President Irene Priolo, said although the rains have started to ease, river levels are still rising.
The region is currently under red alert, the highest-level warning for life-threatening weather events.
