JNB operations ‘normal’ despite storms

Airports Company South Africa has confirmed that flights to and from OR Tambo International Airport are operating normally following severe storms that occurred over the past weekend.

Intense rainfall and flash flooding on January 30, led to temporary waterlogging on the airport’s access road leading to the multistorey parkade.

The downpour also temporarily overwhelmed the airport’s roof drainage system, resulting in water ingress within certain areas of the terminal building.

Ofentse Dijoe, Acsa Group spokesperson, explained that access to the terminals had been briefly restricted but it did not impact any airport operations.

“Airport operations remain normal and there have been no flight delays because of the weather conditions,” said Dijoe.

Acsa confirmed that a specialist contractor was currently assessing the roof structure and would provide airport management with a comprehensive report outlining the extent of the damage and a repair timeline.
