Kenya is planning to increase taxes on local and international air tickets, which have remained unchanged for 13 years.
The National Assembly’s majority leader, Kimani Ichung’wah has submitted a Bill which, if passed, will increase the levies on international air tickets by 25% and 20% for domestic air tickets. So far, the Bill has cleared its second reading in the National Assembly.
Taxes for international tickets will rise from around US$40 (R700) to $50 (R880), and local tickets from KES500 (R70) to KES600 (R80).
According to The East African, funds will likely be allocated to the Tourism Fund, the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority, the Kenya Airports Authority and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority.
