KLM will receive its first A350 at the end of August. The acquisition forms part of the airline's ongoing €7 billion (R132 billion) fleet renewal programme with a focus on upgrading to quieter and more fuel-efficient aircraft. The investment also includes the latest Airbus A321neo for European routes and new Boeing 787s for intercontinental services.
The A350 will feature 26 Premium Comfort seats, 34 business-class seats and 271 seats in economy class. Business-class seats are still undergoing certification and will not be available when the first two aircraft enter service.
KLM has named aircraft in the A350 fleet after iconic Dutch artworks, with the first to be named The Night Watch, after the Rembrandt painting.
The aircraft is scheduled to begin operations in September, with Toronto its inaugural destination.
