European river reaches cruise limit

The Douro River has reached maximum capacity for river cruise ships, with no additional vessels expected to be approved until further notice.

According to a letter sent by the Port Authority of the Douro to cruise operators in March and recently obtained by Travel Weekly, the river has reached its maximum capacity for cruise ships because of limitations of its lock system and operational constraints.

The authority said no additional cruise sailings can be authorised until it completes a review of operational conditions.
