NB - this article refers to LH group flights being restored back to normal after an IT fault caused a massive problem at LH Group, on Thursday, February 16. However this has been superseded by the strike at Munich and Frankfurt which has caused the cancellation of LH flights between South Africa and Germany today, Friday February 17.
Flight systems were earlier up and back to normal for Lufthansa following yesterday’s technological failure. The airline also discovered the cause of the IT outage: a drill had cut into four fibre optic cables from German telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom during third-party construction work on a rail line in Frankfurt.
Two of those cables have been repaired so far by technicians. “We are continuing to work at high pressure on the repairs,” a statement on Deutsche Telekom’s website reads. “The situation is improving continuously.”
Lufthansa has tweeted a string of updates on the situation, urging passengers to check their website for flight information.
“In the event of a cancellation, Lufthansa will rebook you on another flight free of charge and usually automatically and inform you via your mobile phone number. Due to the IT failure, however, there may also be delays and cancellations. If you do not receive a message from Lufthansa, please check the current status of your booking,” the airline states.
Guests on purely domestic flights and to/from Salzburg and Basel are advised to substitute transport with Deutsche Bahn up to and including this Sunday (February 19). The flight ticket can be converted free of charge using the Deutsche Bahn website.
