Liberia to implement carbon tax

Liberia is to introduce a carbon fee on aircraft arriving and departing from its ports of entry, in line with the mandate of its Carbon Markets Authority, established by President Joseph Boakai in October 2025.

According to Carbon Pulse, a carbon market intelligence provider, the carbon fee is estimated to be US$25 (R400) per tonne of CO₂ and will come into effect in March.

The government has said the fee will be used to invest in carbon projects or credits that will monitored by the Carbon Market Authority.

While the fee is inspired by the EU Emissions Trading System, the new Carbon Markets Authority website explains that all carbon credits funded by the fee may not be generated, transferred or traded without the Authority’s permission.
