Lufthansa plans to operate a new direct route between Munich and Johannesburg from June 4, 2024. The route was last on Lufthansa’s schedule in 2005.

The German carrier will use an Airbus A350-900 accommodating 293 passengers in business class, premium economy and economy class. Flights will be on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday mornings, departing Johannesburg at 09h00.

The new service will be in addition to the existing daily services to Frankfurt and Zurich by Lufthansa and SWISS respectively. A total of 25 weekly connections will be available from the group.

“Both corporate and leisure travellers will see this new flight as an interesting new option,” says Matthias Lefevre, GM Sales Southern Africa, Lufthansa Group Airlines. “With this new non-stop flight, we will increase the travel choices from Johannesburg substantially in addition to the existing one to Frankfurt. Both year-round routes can also be combined and are priced at the same level. Both year-round routes can be combined and are priced at the same level.”

The new route will allow South Africans to connect to about 130 destinations throughout Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Middle East.

Munich has 1,5 million residents and is one of Germany’s most important cities as it acts as a major international business centre. Numerous large international companies are headquartered in the Munich area, including BMW and Siemens and Alliance, as well as Microsoft and Google branches.

Munich Airport is the second-largest airport in Germany and the seventh largest in Europe. All Lufthansa Group carriers operate from Terminal 2, and it has been awarded five stars several times by Skytrax.

The Bavarian region is diverse with its alpine landscapes, scenic lakes, famous castles and atmospheric traditional villages. Munich is known for its Christmas markets and major events, such as the annual Oktoberfest beer festival and FC Bayern München soccer matches.

The Alps are only an hour away from the airport by train or car.
