Mallorca to cap tourist numbers

Mallorca plans to cap the number of hotel beds for tourists to address overcrowding, the governing council announced recently.

The plan is to set a cap of 430 000 tourist beds across the island.

President of the Mallorca Council, Catalina Cladera, said the island wanted tourism of greater value and less volume.

After COVID-19 travel restrictions were lifted, the island saw extraordinary visitor numbers. Tourists very quickly filled hotels and holiday rentals, Euronews reports.

Tourist behaviour is also being addressed and there are new rules for alcohol sales and consumption. Alcohol limits have been introduced at several resorts in Magaluf, El Arenal and Ibiza. Guests in some locations have been limited to three drinks at dinner and three drinks at lunch as part of inclusive hotel packages, with extra drinks to be purchased at an extra cost.

The legislation also banned happy hours, pub crawls, two-for-one drink offers, the sale of alcohol in shops between 21h30 and 08h00, and the advertising of party boats.

The resort Playa de Palma has banned people wearing football shirts from entering restaurants.
